Dowager Consort Yang provides crucial guidance in the early and mid-game. Her advice is always sound, but following it blindly can limit your options. Wu Yuanzhao's growth is partly about learning when to follow her aunt's wisdom and when to forge a new path.
Dowager Consort Yang is the only person in Road to Empress who loves Wu Yuanzhao without wanting anything from her — and that is exactly what makes her dangerous to rely on. Played by Liu Min, she is the protagonist’s aunt, her mother’s sister, and a surviving consort of the late emperor: a woman with decades of institutional knowledge and no safe way to use most of it. For players, she is the game’s mentor system wearing a human face, the voice of the old survival playbook — keep your head down, be useful, never threaten anyone — in a story about a niece who will ultimately refuse all three.
As an imperial consort of the late emperor Li Shimin, Dowager Consort Yang belongs to the previous reign — a precarious category of palace resident whose continued comfort depends entirely on remaining useful to the new order and invisible to its rivals. Her title commands respect; her position commands nothing.
What she actually possesses is infrastructure: a network of relationships built over decades, membership in the old consort network that connects figures like Consort Yin, and a granular understanding of how the rear palace really works. In faction terms she is a one-woman safe house — the only place in the early game where Wu Yuanzhao can hear the truth without paying for it.
Her ENFJ profile is the key to reading her scenes. The warmth is real — she is the closest thing to family the protagonist has inside the walls — but it is warmth trained by survival. ENFJ types lead people by caring for them, and her mentorship of Wu Yuanzhao is genuine; yet every piece of advice she gives is also a lesson in risk management learned the hard way.
Her favor attribute is “None — mentor figure,” which the game means literally. You do not farm her. Her guidance is always sound, her route profile notes, but following it blindly limits your options — she teaches the old way of surviving the palace, and a large part of the protagonist’s arc is learning when her aunt’s wisdom stops applying.
Her documented presence in Road to Empress I runs from the early conspiracy arcs to the endgame crucible. In Chapter 4, during the Crown Prince’s Palace Enigma, she is the correct answer to two separate survival questions: when Consort Yin’s murderous intent is exposed, telling Consort Yang is the safe play — her authority shields you, for now — and the closing confession scene asks exactly how much truth to hand her. Per the Conspiracy Unveiled ending requirements, saying only that Kindness plotted to kill the Emperor preserves the chapter end; the whole story gets you killed.
Chapter 5’s Cold Palace material, documented in the Cold Palace Survival ending, is her darkest thread: the ending path requires navigating Consort Yang’s madness, handling a crazed lookalike, and choosing to stick around with the mad aunt to extract the secrets her condition conceals about the palace’s power structure. In Chapter 8, as the Wu prophecy closes in, turning to Consort Yang is listed as family loyalty in the darkest hour.
Her endgame arrives in Chapters 13–14. Chapter 13 is built around Consort Yang’s final gambit: she reveals a devastating secret about the imperial family, and sharing it with Li Zhi makes your bond with him unbreakable. Chapter 14 asks you to decide her fate outright — vengeance is coming for her, acting friendly with her forms an unlikely alliance under duress, and her last stand is a mandatory QTE whose aftermath branches on a choice the player made back in Chapter 2. The chapter-completion ending A Crucible of Life and Death records the outcome plainly: Consort Yang’s demise, alongside Consort Wei’s final gambit and the protagonist’s ascent.
Wu Yuanzhao is her niece, protégée, and last link to family — the relationship that humanizes both of them. With Li Zhi she occupies a stepmother-figure role with a deliberately complex dynamic: an elder of his father’s household watching him become emperor. Her web extends outward through the old consort network, and her enemies are inherited rather than chosen — in Chapter 14 you can even visit Liu Xi stewing in prison while deciding her fate.
Treat Dowager Consort Yang as the game’s tutorial voice with an expiration date. Players typically find her early guidance is the safe option in nearly every documented check — tell her about Yin, confess the limited version, lean on family loyalty in Chapter 8. The two disciplines she demands are information control — give her exactly enough truth, as the Chapter 4 confession punishes oversharing with death — and QTE readiness, since her Chapter 14 last stand is a mandatory reflex check with a long-memory branch attached. In most playthroughs, the hardest part of her arc is not mechanical: it is watching the mentor who taught you survival become the person the court decides cannot be allowed to survive. Follow her wisdom early; be ready to outgrow it when the game asks you to.
